About Bexley Women’s Aid

Bexley Women’s Aid is a charity working together to enable and empower women and children experiencing domestic abuse to obtain and sustain a safe living environment.

For over 40 years, BWA has been committed to providing life-saving support and refuge to women and their children affected by domestic abuse.

BWA is part of the national federation Women’s Aid, sharing the mission that every woman and everybody has the right to live in safety, free violence and abuse.

BWA is gender specific and a women’s only service because overwhelmingly the majority of victims of domestic abuse are women. Domestic abuse is a grave violation of women (and their children’s) human rights. It is the result of an abuse of power and control, and is rooted in the historical status and inequality of women in in society.

At BWA, we make it our mission to empower survivors of domestic abuse and keep their voices at the heart of our work, listening to women and children to respond to and support their needs.

Our aims are to:

  • Provide temporary refuge for women and their children who have experienced domestic abuse.
  • Offer support, advice and advocacy to women and their children living in threatening situations, while helping reduce the long-term negative effects of abuse.
  • Keeping the voice of the survivor at the heart of everything we do.
  • Empower women who have been affected by domestic abuse to determine their own future, live independent lives free from fear and abuse, and support them in achieving this.
  • Recognise and care for the emotional needs of the children and young people living in the refuge.
  • Challenge acceptance of domestic abuse through breaking its surrounding myths and education about its devastating effect.
  • Support and reflect diversity while promoting gender equality.
  • Promote equal opportunities in all areas of work and services.
  • Ensure equal access to services so that people can overcome disadvantage: social, financial, emotional, health and well-being, housing, employment, leisure, education and the ability to live safely
  • Provide community education in the hopes of teaching men, women and children about healthy, respectful relationships in order to prevent domestic abuse and build to a future where domestic abuse is not tolerated.

We achieve this by providing:

  • Safe temporary refuge space for 28 women and their children.
  • Children’s activity centres for refuge residents.
  • Create cohesive inter-agency responses to domestic abuse and develop partnerships to work towards a society in which domestic abuse is no longer tolerated.
  • Support groups, such as: Freedom Program; Mothers Moving Forward and the Positive Assertive Confidence Training (PACT).
  • Family support services for refuge residents.
  • Telephone Helpline.
  • Awareness workshops and training.
  • Outreach support services for women and children.
  • Specialist outreach support services for European Economic Area Nationals (EEA) and women who are No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) who have experienced domestic abuse.
  • Resettlement support.
  • Education and Prevention work with children, young people, professionals and the general public.

Our services are open to all women and we do not target any groups specifically.
