Bexley Women’s Aid provides emergency accommodation for women and their children seeking to escape domestic abuse. BWA is able to accommodate up to 28 women and their children at any one time. It is your new safe space, with experienced and specialist staff who will provide you with individual support.
A refuge is a safe space where you and your children can stay, free from fear. During your stay, you will be provided safe housing in a confidential location, with support which will help you locate your new housing and assist you in obtaining the financial and community resources you need. We provide emotional and practical support to help you through this difficult time and to regain your independence. Our specialised programmes are provided for both women and children during their stay, helping anyone affected by domestic abuse to recover from the experiences.
At BWA we acknowledge that every woman who comes into our service is different and has different needs and experiences. It is for this reason that each woman in refuge has a key worker who takes the time to work individually with, to assess need and devise an appropriate action plan with clear aims and outcomes to be achieved. Then during key working sessions the plans are updated and evaluated.
For many women who access our services their self-esteem and confidence has dropped to a low point and some struggle to trust and build relationships. When we monitor and record outcomes we recognise the importance of celebrating the things that seem little but are actually very key in that woman’s road to recovery. For example, being able to attend an appointment unaccompanied or assert themselves during a phone call. We also support the women in refuge with wider outcomes such as moving on from the refuge into safe housing, completing a group programme, training course, volunteer placement or returning to employment.
BWA’s refuges are a self-contained, clean and welcoming place to call your own. Our Supported Housing Officers also ensure that we are maintaining a high standard of accommodation for our residents. In partnership with L &Q, Refuge Team Leader and Handy Person our refuge is regularly monitored to ensure we adhere to health and safety requirements and that our properties are appropriately furnished, repaired and refurbished.
BWA will give you your own room for yourself or a room for mothers to share with your children. There will also be a living room, TV, kitchen, playroom and a bathroom, which you will shared with other refuge residents. The kitchen is fitted with all the utilities you will need, and it is up to you and the other refuge residents whether or not you share cooking or eat together at mealtimes- you can be as self-contained or as sociable as you like. BWA will provide everything you and your children need to help you gain your independence and move forward into your new life.
